The Sorbian/Wendish language retained many Ancient Slavonic characteristics. Since the middle of the 19th century two languages were generally accepted: the Upper Sorbian written language based on the dialect around Bautzen which was the obligatory Sorbian public standard in Upper Lusatia and the Lower Sorbian language based on the dialect around Cottbus in Lower Lusatia.

The settlement area of the Sorbs has been shrinking for 1000 years. Today the Upper Sorbs are located in the Upper Lusatia around Bautzen. The Lower Sorbs live in the Lower Lusatia around Cottbus. In the border area between both regions, the Middle Lusatia, a transition dialect has developed.

The Domowina – Association of Lusation Sorbs e. V. operates as the politically-independent and autonomous Association of Lusatian Sorbs, and serves as the parent organisation of Sorbian associations in Upper, Middle and Lower Lusatia. Its members are committed to culture, politics, education, language, science and economics – issues that represent the uniqueness of the Sorbian area of settlement in Saxony and Brandenburg.
